Exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) during pregancy can interfere with fetal endogenous hormonal systems, compromise early developmental processes and predispose the fetus to adverse health effects later in life. This hypothesis has had intense focus the past 25 years, but the quality of data and methods available to study long-term effects have limited our ability to draw firm conclusions. this project applies newly developed statistical methods to a unique cohort of mothers and their adult children with extensive information on early and adult exposure with the goal to determine the importance of fetal mixture-effects of EDCs for later health.
Specifically, combined maternal exposure to 22 omnipresent EDCs during early pregnancy and potential associations with the following long-term health outcomes in offspring will be assessed:
1) Congenital genital malformations, semen quality and sex hormones
2) Body composition and metabolic syndrome
3) Cognitive deficits
4) Pulmonary function including lung capacity and asthma
