Abstract

Introduction: Proactive safety indicators predicting accident outcomes are important for the monitoring of the enterprises' work environment efforts. These indicators can be essential for both the enterprise and for the relevant authorities to overview and follow the development of key activities to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to improve safety and reduce accidents at work. Whereas a number of proactive safety indicators representing OSH efforts are available for enterprises to use, there is a lack of knowledge about the predictive validity of such indicators. Thus, there seems to be a ‘missing link’ between proactive leading indicators and lagging indicators, such as accidents at work. In this paper, a distinction is made between proactive indicators for the companies 'systematic’ (process-based) work environment efforts and the companies' specific (contend based) work environment efforts.
